Eastside Chapter, WSMTA Chapter Meeting
September 24, 2007
President Carol Hibbard opened the meeting at 9:30 am. The minutes of the April meeting were approved as posted.
Jeanine Edmonds presented the finance report. The chapterÕs financial position in the beginning of the current fiscal year (July 1) was very similar to the chapterÕs financial position at the beginning of the previous year. This indicates that the majority of our programs are self-supporting. There has been a total of $615 donated to the Annin Memorial Fund. Jeanine told members that a copy of the financial report is available upon request.
Mr. Leng Tshua welcomed the chapter to Sherman Clay and invited the members to remain after the meeting for a luncheon hosted by the store. He encouraged members come to the pre-owned Steinway piano sale at McCaw Hall on October 5th Š 7th. He also informed the members that the store can provide a new Henry F. Miller studio piano for $49.95 rental fee.
Rebecca introduced new members and visitors present at the meeting and gave a general invitation to all new members and mentors to attend the New Member Tea on Friday, September 28th.
Betty Mak presented the correspondence sent on behalf of the chapter during the summer months. Congratulations were sent to students of Eastside Chapter members who were winners in last yearÕs Young Composers Project along with a travel stipend for those performing at the state convention. Sympathy cards were sent following the death of Roz Annin, Dorothy Woodcock, and Kent Coleman as well as a get-well card to Pat Martin following her surgery.
Carol Hibbard showed pamphlets and business cards advertising Eastside Chapter which are available for members to use while supplies last. Teachers interested in receiving new students were again directed to sign up on the teacher referral list. Potential students from the referral phone line will be directed to these teachers based upon teacher specialty and geographic location.
Yunbo Cassady announced the artist for this yearÕs scholarship recital as Mr. Frank Wiens. The recital will be on Friday, November 2nd, 7:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue. She reminded the membership that teachers planning to enter students in the Scholarship Competition and the Young Composers Project must sell tickets equaling the number of students entered in these competitions. Tickets and flyers now available.
Carol Hibbard thanked Olive Yau for her work on the yearbook. She also pointed out the new chapter logo, designed by Olive, which was used throughout the book. Olive Yau thanked all those who helped prepare the yearbook for publication.
Donna Sams announced the 2007-2008 workshops. All workshops will be held at Sherman Clay in Bellevue. Members who register for all four workshops will benefit from a price reduction.
Kai-Li Yang informed the membership of the conference to be held in Marysville on October 13th. The theme for the conference is Music in the Real World. Volunteers are still needed. Dr. Steven Spooner will be presenting a masterclass at the conference and is looking for an intermediate level student to participate in the class. Information is available upon request.
Sheri Skidmore announced this yearÕs adjudication for the 1st week of March with Leonard Richter, Dale Parkinson, Steven Spooner, Jung Spooner, and Jody Graves as adjudicators. She encouraged teachers to participate and to consider buying extra time for their students. To better prepare the schedule for this event, teachers will be asked to give an estimate of the number of students who will participate at the October chapter meeting.
Carmen Still introduced the 2008 festival scheduled for January 26, 2008 including the workshop presenters. Flyers and registration packets were available after the meeting.
Nancy Jang notified the membership that competition rule booklets are now available for distribution. Registration is due by January 15, 2008. In addition, booklets are available from last yearÕs competition. A meeting for all teachers entering students in the competition will be held on October 5th at Yunbo CassadyÕs house.
Nicole Kim announced that there would be no recital prior to the October meeting but that there were still 1 or 2 openings for performers this year. Please provide her with a 100 or less word biography if interested in performing on an upcoming recital.
Sherry Owen encouraged members to peruse the library materials. The entire library circulation is published in the yearbook. The library will be open prior to each chapter meeting and during the coffee break.
Re-Certification Points
Carol Hibbard announced that several members are currently working on completing their certification. Since attendance at monthly programs qualifies as ½ certification point, a list will be passed around during monthly post-meeting programs to help members verify their attendance at the program. Carmen Still will collect this information in a database which can be printed a copy upon request to apply for recertification.
