Eastside Chapter, WSMTA Chapter Meeting
September 22, 2008
President Carol Hibbard opened the meeting at 9:37 am.
The April minutes were approved as read.
Finance Report
Jeanine
Edmonds reported the overall picture of the state of the finances. (see
attached) This summer the finances were moved from Washington Mutual to
Washington Federal Savings for stability. The Woodcock funds were also spread
out over several banks to keep them safe.

Membership Report
Betty
Mak was introduced as the Membership Chair. Betty spoke about the mentorship
program and passed out a sign up sheet for those interested.
There
will be a New Member's Tea at Sherry Owen's home on November 3rd from 10-12pm.
Any new members in the last few years are welcome.
Members
need to contact Betty if they are not receiving the Opus, or do not have name
tags or their WSMTA certificates.
Yearbook
Olive
thanked Betty and Carol for all their hard work towards the yearbook.
The
participating members page is located on page 4; the goal of the participating
member program is to help keep members involved.
Thanks
to Tara Brase for taking care of the advertisers for the yearbook.
Board Changes
Carol
clarified that Betty Mak is the new Vice President, and Carolyn Carson is the
new Corresponding Secretary.
Teacher Referral Sign-up
Laurie
Wright explained the teacher referral sign-up. The sheet was made available to
the members.
Scholarship Recital Report
The
2008 Scholarship Recital will be October 24th at 7pm. The recitalist is Steven
Spooner with a program aimed toward students. Thanks to Olive for designing the flyer and programs. The
members were encouraged to get the tickets after the meeting. Spooner will also be available for
private lesson at $100 per hour.
Workshops
There will be a workshop on Oct. 6th from 10-12:30 by
Leonard Richter. He will speak on repertoire ideas and how to transition from
the method books to the masters.
Steven Spooner will give a workshop Thursday morning on October
23rd from 10-12:30 on how to use
great piano recordings effectively in the studio. On January 12th from 10-12:30pm Jill Timmons and Judith
Cohen will present and perform on duet and duo piano literature.
Scholarship Competition Report
The
information on the upcoming Scholarship competition is on page 16 of the
yearbook. The dates are April 15-18th. The rulebook was distributed. The
registration form is due January 15th, no exceptions. Students must purchase
tickets to the recital to participate in the competitions. There is also a new rule: Students must
commit to performing in the state recital to be considered as a state
recitalist.
District Conference
The
District Conference will be October 11th in Marysville. Cassandra Carr and Victoria Sabo will
present at the conference.
Adjudications
There
is a correction to the adjudication dates in the yearbook: the dates are March
9-14th. There are 7 great adjudicators this year. Adjudications are an
opportunity for all students to be heard. The Honors recital is available as a
way to honor the top students in each studio.
Ribbon Festival
Carmen
announced that the date for Ribbon Festival is January 24th, 2009 at Cedar Park
Assembly. Registration is $25. There are more volunteer hours required this
year, and teachers must be there the first 5 hours of volunteer time. The
workshops this year include: Baroque and Renaissance instruments, African music
presented by William Nyaho, Rhythm Jam, Violin, Brass, Introduction to
Guitar, Music can Dance,
Improvisation by Forrest Kinney. Mills Music will provide the instruments. The
workshop levels will be determined by both the theory levels and age, and not
by the adjudication levels as in previous years.
Musicianship Exams
Jeanine
explained that the state is expanding the Musicianship Program and is using the
Kansas program as a template. The chapter will start incorporating the state
musicianship exams into the Ribbon Festival. Students may choose not to do the
official musicianship exam but do Ribbon Festival theory and ear training tests
as normal. If there are any questions about the musicianship exams please ask.
There will be training sessions for the facilitators at the festival; one in
the morning and one in the afternoon.
Pre-Meeting Recitals
Please
contact Nicole Kim if interested in performing in a pre-meeting recital.
Library
Sherry
Owen reported new materials this year.
The list of materials is in the yearbook and on the website.
Certification
Gladys
Bath announced that three people had certification action. Bonnie Debu received a certification
grant, Carmen Still renewed her certification, and Elizabeth Yusim completed
her certification.
New Business
Matt from Sherman Clay asked members not to park in the
Aqua Quip parking lot, but to park in the Storeables parking lot when needed.
He announced a luncheon after the meeting.
Matt informed the members of the teacher referral website
on the Steinway website.
WSMTA
study grants are available for hardworking students with severe financial need.
National
certification grants are available as well.
MTNA.org
has discussion boards and forums where many different topics are discussed.
Remember
there is an upcoming vote for national and district board members.
MTNA
competition is November 7-9th . Door monitors and timekeepers are needed.

Sondra
Hopper announced that the 10 Grands concert will be held on April 3rd at
Benaroya Hall.
Nicole
Kim will be in concert on Oct. 26th at 1pm.
Programs
Donald
introduced Willard Schultz as the morning's presenter. He will present
'Thumbs: Their Training, Duties and Privileges."
