Chapter Meeting
President KaiLi Yang opened the meeting at 9:44 am. She thanked all members for voting on several issues over the summer. KaiLi Yang, Carol Hibbard, Julie Howe and Yunbo Cassady all attended the Leadership conference and received a lot of good information.
The April minutes were approved as posted.
Sherry Owen gave the Fiscal year finance report from July 2008-June 2009. (see attached)
Membership Report
Betty Mak introduced the new members. Membership certificates were made available on the table during the break. Betty explained the mentorship program, and the mentorship signup sheet was passed around.
KaiLi honored those who have been members for 30 years: Joan Crow, Kathleen Heiner and Ann Stockman.
Election and Installation
KaiLi shared that the board voted on electing Jeanne Ellis as the new vice president. This is to replace Betty Mak, who had graciously stepped in as interim vice president. The members voted Jeanne Ellis in as the new vice president, and both Jeanne and Sherry Owen were installed into their new positions.
District Conference
The District conference will be on October 10, and the presenters are Jody Graves and Sharon Clark.
Bylaws
Carol Hibbard explained the bylaw changes. There were discrepancies between the bylaws and the constitution. Organizations are now only using bylaws and do not have a constitution. The Eastside Chapter will combine the constitution into the bylaws. Carol reviewed the changes with the members. They are posted on the website. The bylaws were accepted by the members.
Yearbook
Olive Yau introduced the yearbook. Tara Brase shared that there are advertisements in the back of the yearbook. Pacific Music paid for advertising but did not make it into the yearbook. She urged members to read the advertisements and capitalize on the discounts.
Correspondence
Risa shared that $100 donation checks were sent to Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Young Artists Music Festival, and Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside. She received a thank you for the BYSO donation. She sent cards to Deborah Dewey, Rebecca Bennett, Joan Crow, Chris Kiehl and Tharald Borgier. Congratulations cards were sent to Laurie Hyink for the birth of her child and to Stephanie White for her recent marriage.
Scholarship Recital
The recital this year will feature Jack Winerock, and will be held October 30, 2009. Jack will be in town October 26th through November 1st. He will be teaching private lessons so contact Yunbo if interested. Fliers are available and tickets are now on sale.
Scholarship Competition
Julie shared that the rulebooks are available for teachers entering students into the competition. She encouraged teachers to consider entering their students if they have not done so in the past.
Sherry Owen read a report from Laurie Mitchell. Olive Yau shared that the referral list will now be posted on the website, and it will be organized by zip code. The referral list was made available to the members.
Workshops
Donna Sams shared about the workshops for the year. The fee for all three workshops is $45 and is due by Oct. 5th. The first workshop is Sandra Soderlund on How the Composers Taught and How They Played.
Ribbon Festival
The Ribbon Festival date is February 27th. Registration packets were made available to members. Carmen encouraged teachers to make as many copies as they need to. On the back of the student form there is a new section to coordinate their days better. Carmen passed out a sign up sheet for those who would be willing to help her coordinate events.
Pre-Meeting Recitals
Nicole Kim shared that all spots are filled except for January.
Library
Pamela Huang asked that members share any good ideas for the library with her.
New Business
MTNA would like to make Linda Burger an MTNA Fellow. WSMTA needs to raise $1000 in donations to MTNA in LindaÕs name. This is currently a secret to Linda. You can make donations online.
Sondra Hopper announced that the 10 Grands concert will be May 21, 2010 this year.
Julie announced the WSMTA conference will be in Olympia this year, and the artist will be John Kimura Parker.
Eric introduced Cassandra Carr as the guest presenter on Interpretation.
